Privacy Policy

1. About this policy
Maka Tipping (“we”, “us”) is based in Australia. We respect your privacy and we handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and store it, who we share it with, and your rights over it.
2. What we collect
When you use Maka Tipping we may collect:
- Account information — your email address, a username, the country you select, and (if you choose to add one) an avatar image.
- Sign-in information — if you sign in with Google, we receive your email, name and profile picture from Google. We don’t receive your Google password.
- App activity — the picks you submit, groups you join or create, friends you follow, comments you post, and your points and leaderboard history.
- Technical information — device type, browser, approximate location based on IP address, and basic usage logs needed to keep the app running and secure.
- Cookies — we use first-party cookies set by our authentication provider to keep you signed in. We don’t use third-party advertising cookies.
- Push notification tokens — if you use our iOS app and grant notification permission, Apple gives us an anonymous device token so we can send you push notifications (for example: fight pick reminders, results posted, group activity). The token only identifies your device to Apple’s notification service — it doesn’t tell us anything about you personally. You can turn notifications off at any time in iOS Settings.
We don’t collect sensitive information (as defined in the Privacy Act) such as health, racial, political or religious information, and we ask that you don’t share that kind of information through the app.
3. Why we collect it
We use your personal information to:
- create and manage your account, and verify your email
- show your username, avatar and country on leaderboards, profiles, group pages and forum posts
- let you create and join groups, follow friends, and submit picks
- calculate scores, rankings and season history
- keep the app secure, prevent abuse and enforce our Terms of Service
- respond to support questions you send us
- send essential service emails (for example: email verification, password reset)
4. What other users can see
Maka Tipping is a social app, so some of your information is visible to other users by design. Your username, avatar, country, points, picks (after they lock), group memberships, public profile and forum posts can be seen by other signed-in users. Your email address is private and is not shown to other users.
5. Who we share information with
We don’t sell your personal information. We share it only with:
- Supabase — our database, authentication and storage provider. Supabase processes your account data and picks on our behalf.
- Google — if you choose to sign in with Google, Google receives the fact that you signed in to Maka Tipping.
- Hosting and email providers — the providers we use to serve the app and send service emails (for example: account verification).
- Law enforcement or regulators — where we are required by Australian law to disclose information.
- Apple Push Notification service (APNs) — Apple delivers our push notifications to your iPhone. We send Apple the device token, the notification message, and nothing else.
We choose providers that take security and privacy seriously and we only give them the information they need to do their job.
6. Where your information is stored
Some of the providers we use (including Supabase and Google) may store and process information on servers located outside Australia, including in the United States and other countries. By using Maka Tipping you consent to your personal information being transferred and stored overseas for these purposes. We take reasonable steps to make sure overseas providers handle your information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.
7. Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information from loss, misuse, unauthorised access and disclosure. This includes using HTTPS, hashed passwords, row-level access controls in our database, and limiting which staff can access account data. No system is perfectly secure, so we can’t guarantee that your information will never be accessed by an unauthorised person, but if a notifiable data breach happens we’ll let affected users and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) know in line with the law.
8. How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as your account is open and for a reasonable period after that to deal with disputes, enforce our terms, and meet legal obligations. If you delete your account, we’ll remove or de-identify your personal information, except where we’re legally required to keep it.
9. Your rights
Under the Australian Privacy Act you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- ask us to correct information that’s inaccurate, out of date or incomplete
- ask us to delete your account and personal information (subject to legal exceptions)
- withdraw your consent to optional processing at any time
You can update most of this yourself from your profile and settings pages. For anything else, email us at matty@makatipping.comand we’ll respond within 30 days.
10. Children
Maka Tipping isn’t intended for children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has signed up, please contact us and we’ll remove the account.
11. Complaints
If you think we’ve handled your personal information in a way that breaches the Australian Privacy Principles, please email matty@makatipping.com first so we can try to fix it. If you’re not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. The “Last updated” date at the top will tell you when. If we make a material change we’ll let you know in the app or by email.
